Lehams (Jams)
Leham (also known as Lehya or Lehyam)
1. Definition: Lehams are herbal formulations that have a jam-like consistency. The primary base is usually jaggery or sugar, which aids in preservation and adds to the taste. Sometimes ghee or sesame oil is also added.
2. Preparation: Lehams are made by cooking and reducing herbal decoctions to a thick consistency, and then adding powdered herbs and sweetening agents like jaggery or sugar. This mix is further cooked until it reaches a jam-like consistency.
3. Usage: They are primarily given for oral administration, and due to their sweet taste, they are more palatable, especially for children.
4. Benefits: Their benefits range widely depending on the ingredients. Common benefits include strengthening digestion, rejuvenating tissues, boosting immunity, and providing specific therapeutic effects based on the herbs used.
Rasayana:
1. Definition: The term “Rasayana” is derived from two words – “Rasa” (essence) and “Ayana” (pathway). In Ayurveda, Rasayanas are formulations or practices that rejuvenate and revitalize the body and mind.
2. Types: Dravya Rasayana: Based on substances like herbs, minerals, etc. Examples include Chyavanaprasam, Triphala, and Shilajit. Adravya Rasayana: Based on practices and regimens, like meditation, specific dietary practices, etc.
3. Usage: Rasayana therapies can be preventive or curative. They are used as anti-aging remedies, to rejuvenate after an illness, or as preventive measures to boost immunity and enhance overall vitality.
4. Benefits: Physical: Strengthening of tissues, improvement in physical strength, enhanced immunity, and improved functioning of body systems. o Mental: Enhancing cognitive functions, improving memory, and promoting mental clarity.
