Kasayam (Tablet)
Kwatham (Kashayam) in Ayurveda:
Definition: Kwatham is a concentrated liquid prepared by boiling specific herbs in water to harness their medicinal values. Essentially, it’s a herbal decoction.
1. Preparation: o The raw herbs (either fresh or dried) are coarsely powdered. o This powder is then soaked in water for a specific duration. o The mixture is boiled and reduced to one-fourth or one-eighth of its original volume. o Once boiled, it is strained to remove the coarse material, leaving behind the liquid kwatham.
2. Dosage Forms: o While traditionally consumed as a liquid, advancements in Ayurvedic pharmacology have led to the decoctions being made available in tablet forms, known as “Kwatham tablets” or “Kashayam tablets”. These are easier to transport, have a longer shelf life, and can be consumed with water, making it more convenient for the user.
3. Storage: Liquid kwathams are generally advised to be consumed fresh, or they can be stored for a short period. The tablet form, however, has a longer shelf life.
